Activist Collective Claims to Have Extracted Millions of Music Files from the Streaming Giant

A digital rights organization has stated to have harvested a vast number of songs from the popular streaming service and is preparing to release them online.

Potential Impetus for AI Training

Industry experts said the apparent leak could aid artificial intelligence firms searching for material to develop their models.

An entity called Anna’s Archive reported it had obtained 86 million audio tracks from Spotify and 256 million rows of associated data such as performer and record names. The company, which carries more than 100 million tracks, confirmed that the leak did not constitute its full catalog.

“We have located and disabled the malicious user accounts that were involved in illegal scraping,” stated a Spotify spokesperson.

The Swedish company, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, added that an investigation into unauthorised access identified a third party collected public metadata and used questionable methods to bypass DRM [digital rights management].

Group's Stated Mission and Worries

Spotify does not believe the audio taken by Anna’s Archive has been made public yet. Anna’s Archive, which is recognized for offering links to copyright-infringing books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘historical repository’ for music.

The group claimed the music files accounted for 99.6% of all music listened to by Spotify users and would be distributed via ‘torrents’, a method of exchanging large digital files online.

“Naturally the service doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic beginning,” commented Anna’s Archive, which describes its purpose as “safeguarding humanity’s information and culture”.

AI Training and Copyright Debate

Ed Newton-Rex for protecting artists’ rights, said the breached music would likely be utilized for developing artificial intelligence systems.

“Training on pirated data is unfortunately widespread in the tech sector, so this accessed music is highly likely to be used instructing AI models,” he stated.

The Anna’s Archive site alludes to a large online archive, a huge online repository of pirated books that has reportedly been leveraged by Meta to train its systems.

A founder of an artificial intelligence company posted on LinkedIn that individuals of the public could in principle “build their own personal free equivalent of the service”. The executive said it could also enable tech companies to “educate models on contemporary music at scale”.

Copyright has become a key issue between artists, authors and content creators on one side and tech giants on the other.

Government Proposals and Reactions

Across Britain, creative professionals have protested against a ministerial suggestion to let AI companies use copyright-protected work without permission unless the rights holder opts out. Virtually every participant to a government consultation on the idea has supported artists’ concerns.

A government minister for science, research and development told parliament this month there was “no clear consensus” on the issue, noting that ministers would “use the time to get this right”. The administration has committed to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by next year.
