The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
