An defence official has stated that the MoD is currently examining the potential threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been told to refrain from talking about classified matters in any vehicles.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
In a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified information while riding in China-made vehicles.
He said that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.
Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing threats of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Security Background
This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been shining laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
The broader security situation highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in every areas of official activities, from vehicle use to communication practices.
