Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
